Filing a Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 bankruptcy is a personal and emotional decision, requiring careful thought and thorough investigation of your unique financial situation. Investigating the types of bankruptcy and discussing any viable alternatives that you have should also be addressed before making the final decision to declare bankruptcy.
“Once the bankruptcy process is started, threatening and intimidating phone calls and nasty letters from creditors will stop and other welcome relief will be available to you.
Our clients generally feel a tremendous relief and a renewed sense of hope after our initial meeting.
I look forward to meeting you in person.”

Stephen R. Harris, Esq.
Harris Bankruptcy Law, LLC
I have practiced law primarily in chapter 11 business-bankruptcy arena for over 45 years in Northern Nevada. My ‘extreme’ motivation to help debtors solve their business issues originated in my teenage years while living in Las Vegas, Nevada, during the mid-60s. At age 15 I worked for James E. Rogers, Esq. as his law- firm-runner and general all-around maintenance person. Being in the presence of Jim Rogers on a nearly daily basis for over 3 years motivated me to go to college and then attend law school. Jim Rogers was my mentor, constantly encouraging me. I was able to attend undergraduate school at the University of Southern California and then pursue my legal education at the University of San Diego; graduating in June 1974. I became a licensed attorney in the State of Nevada in September 1974.
I worked for Jim Rogers in his Las Vegas law firm for approximately 16 months. I then relocated to Reno, Nevada, taking a job with the Federal Public Defender’s office. The desire to pursue my courtroom skills paid off. I was able to achieve 7 criminal jury acquittals out of 8 criminal jury trials in an approximate four-year time period. In August 1976 I started private practice in Reno, Nevada, and never looked back.
My interest in bankruptcy law was sparked by United States Bankruptcy Judge, Bert Goldwater. In late 1976-77 I was given the opportunity to serve as a bankruptcy trustee for several real-estate bankruptcy cases. In 1979 I remember selling the “River Inn Resort” in Bankruptcy Court. My analogy is as follows; as a wedding takes place and the priest asks if anyone objects to this man and wife being together. I had the potential buyer stand up in the Courtroom and shout that he would sue us all if we did not sell him the “River Inn Resort” at a higher price than it was being offered. We obviously were persuaded by the ‘wisdom’ of this higher offer and accepted it.
From 1976 until the present day I have originated or been involved in over 1,000 Chapter 11 business reorganization cases, filed in excess of over 5,000 Chapter 7 liquidation cases, and filed in excess of 400 to 500 Chapter 13 wage earner reorganization cases. I primarily represented the legal interests of debtors filing bankruptcy. Sometimes, however, having served as a trustee for debtors, I also represented creditors. My passion is representing individuals and companies that need the protection of the Bankruptcy Code and the strategizing that goes with it. It’s not always the case when a person is in financial trouble that he or she needs to file a bankruptcy case. Often if legally appropriate I will counsel my client not to file bankruptcy, or to file bankruptcy when the timing is strategically correct for the client.
Suffice it to say . . . I love what I do!

Toy Train Hobbyist
Many of Steve’s clients don’t realize he is a professional toy-train hobbyist. It may sound immature, but some of Steve’s trains are truly collectibles and sought after all over the country.
If you share an interest in a hobby and are curious. The next time you come to the office have Hannah show you some of Steve’s trains on display.
